2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The London Olympic Stadium is 53 meters high. This blog had about 580 visitors in 2012. If every visitor were a meter, this blog would be 11 times taller than the Olympic Stadium – not too shabby.

Steve Jobs Dies – Legend & History

Shocking news yesterday evening that the Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died.   The former Apple CEO was suffering from cancer for many years, but had never left the Apple headquarters till a few months ago, late August to be exact.  Steve Paul Jobs, died at home with his wife and 4 children at age 56.

Interesting notes about the legend:

  • At age 13, he called up the head of HP and pursuaded him into giving Jobs computer chips for free.
  • “if he were not so canny in determining where others had failed in producing great products and what was necessary to succeed, his pushiness and imperiousness would have made him a figure of mockery.”- writer at Wired magazine quotes
  • Jobs worked at HP as a teenager, and then later at Atari – at the time the video game company was just getting started
  • “Electronics was something I could always fall back on when I needed food on the table”  – Steve Jobs, during his teen years
  • Job’s highschool buddy – Steve Wozniak was in the ComputerClub in high school.  They were working on a personal computer idea, which Jobs took to mind as a great business idea
  • He thought, “personal computers can appeal to an audience far beyond geeks.”
  • Jobs would make deals with electronic parts companies, getting similar prices to those that major companies were paying, while Woz and a small team of teenage engineers worked in the Jobs family garage.
  • Jobs quotes, “We were working 18 hours a day, seven days a week — having fun.”
  • At age 22- Apple II was founded, around the same time that Bill Gates founded Microsoft.  On Dec. 12, 1980, Apple held an IPO.
  • On Jan. 24, 1984, Jobs publicly released the Macintosh computer.
  • Jobs loved music. His heroes were Bob Dylan and the Beatles.
  • Jobs was a proud, proud father of four children, three from his marriage to Laurene Powell.

We will always and forever remeber the man behind the device that wrote this blog post.  Thank you for changing our lives and our world.

People on the go, and may even take your users away from Blackberry all-together.

The powerful new iPhone 4s will have a better resolution than iPhone 4.  The A6 chipset will power it and with just one battery charge will last much longer. A6 is essentially low power consumption chip that will boost the battery support of the device on the move.

Google Panda – 10 Steps to Dealing

Google Panda has been out for quite a while now, and we are seeing some challenges.  Here are 10 steps to keeping up with Panda’s intense search features:

1) Write for Humans, not for Machines.  Realize that your audience isn’t another person sitting at their computer desk writing another article, realize that you have people that are interested in your content, and that want to read what you have to say.  Don’t be ashamed if your article isnt’ 100% well written, just be sure to get all the right info and your readers will follow.

2) Forget about Google Translator.  If you need something converted into another language, don’t resort to Google Translator, get on the phone and hire a real translator, nothing is ever done correctly by a machine, a person’s touch is always the way to go.  What would Harry Potter be without a real translator?

3) 100% Authenticity. Dont’ copy content from other websites, Google will know that you are plagarizing and will send your site down to the bottom of the list. Be smart, and original.

4) Listen to your Audience. Take note of the comments people leave you, there is a comment section for a reason, so take into account what people have to say about your work.

5) Be Creative. Try and find content on the web that hasn’t been “shared” by everyone.  Tell me something I don’t already know, and haven’t seen in someone’s newsfeed a million times.

6) Analyze your audience. Write content that people want to read, follow Google Analytics and see how your website is trending and why, be smart about using your analytics tools.

7) Update your website at least 1 time a week. New content floods into Google every second, how can you compete with that if you always have old content on your site.  Put a blog section on your site so that you can always be  adding more content to the web.

8) Careful with Content Presentation. Make it look good, include keywords when possible, but don’t flood the system.  Don’t make sentences that don’t make sense.  You can’t have a million keywords and not have a good sentence.

9) Interesting Info. Make sure the info you post is interesting, and relevant to what your readers are looking for.  If you have a site about beer, don’t start posting stuff about polka-dots.

10) USE SOCIAL NETWORKING. One of the biggest and final points, be sure to share everything you do with those around you, social networking is now at the top of Google’s rankings so you need to be aware that people will be seeing this and are using this on a daily basis.

.CO the same in search results as a .COM

Domain registration operator .CO Internet announced today that the company has registered the one millionth .CO domain name, less than a year after launching in July 2010.

www.panormus.co
.CO Internet thanks Overstock, Amazon and Twitter (among others) for the rapid growth. Overstock internationally rebranded its operation O.CO and the domain name has been featured across Web and Internet advertising, giving the .CO domain great visibility. The millionth .CO domain was registered at GoDaddy, which .CO Internet says is the largest retailer of .CO domain names globally.
“Mainstream awareness of .co is building with huge brands like Amazon, Twitter, and Overstock; and so is awareness of entrepreneurs that their next domain doesn’t need to be 23 letters long or lack vowels or cost a million dollars,” said Naval Ravikant, founder of Angel List (Angel.CO), in a press release.

Not long time ago parallax scrolling effect became one of the most attractive trends that now makes noise in the web design world. Today, if you want to create a 3D effect on your web site you needn’t use Flash and video. In case you don’t know about this technique, parallax scrolling in web design is the technique that features layered images that move around the website in different speeds/perspectives creating a nice and interesting 3D illusion.

Steve Jobs Bye Bye!

The resignation of Apple Inc.’s chief executive Steve Jobs marks the end of an era, but his departure is not likely to make an immediate impact on the company and its successful line of products, analysts say.

Jobs, 56, submitted his resignation to the Apple board of directors on Wednesday and recommended they name Tim Cook as his successor. In a letter announcing his resignation, Jobs asked to remain chairman of the board and an Apple employee.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s C.E.O., I would be the first to let you know,” Jobs wrote. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

“I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role,” Jobs said in the letter.
